December Wine: Gaintus Radical

Montrubí has released the 2021 vintage of its Gaintus Radical, a red wine that reaffirms the estate’s commitment to reviving and championing Sumoll, one of the historic grape varieties of the Penedès region which, in recent years, has sparked renewed interest among consumers and professionals. This vintage enters the market under the Penedès Designation of Origin and with a limited production of 4,825 bottles, reinforcing the exclusive character of this wine.

The most refined expression of mountain-grown Sumoll

The wine originates from vineyards located at 550 metres of altitude, in conditions that favour slow ripening and naturally high acidity. The hand-harvested grapes underwent stainless-steel fermentation with native yeasts, followed by a slow pressing and a four-month ageing period in used 300-litre French oak barrels.

Gaintus Radical 2021 shows a ruby colour with medium depth. On the nose it offers aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant and cherry, with notes of undergrowth, mushrooms and moss; on the palate it preserves the fresh, vibrant character of Sumoll, with soft tannins, marked acidity and a well-defined varietal profile. It pairs well with rich dishes such as cod, bluefin tuna, charcuterie boards or traditional preparations like cannelloni. So make sure to set aside a bottle or two for your Christmas meals!

Endorsed by international critics

Gaintus Radical’s trajectory has been backed by specialised critics, and the 2021 vintage maintains its level of excellence with outstanding ratings: 93 Parker points, 92 Guía Peñín points, 91 Decanter points and 92 Wine & Spirits points. These scores reinforce the wine’s position as one of the most noteworthy interpretations of Sumoll in today’s wine scene.
