The Estate
Finca Montrubí is in the Avellà Valley, an idyllic setting in Alt Penedès that extends over 250 acres of land, 100 of which are vineyards and are arranged in 35 plots embraced by forests of Mediterranean pines, holm oaks, olive trees and oaks.
We practice certified organic farming and work with local grape varieties from the Penedès region. We have been making wines since 1984 and the current project consists of the winery itself, the Xalet 1902, which is a colonial building from the beginning of the 20th century, completely restored that includes a wine bar and a restaurant, and the Hotel Casa Gran 1771 (5*), an elegant boutique hotel.
One of the most important features of the estate are the remains of an 11th-century hermitage called Sant Andreu de l’Avellà, which we decided to recover with the help of ArqueoVitis, a team of archaeologists, and which gives us 360º panorama of the Estate.
Chronology
Late XVIII century
A winery is built in l’Avellà for the family that owns the estate. Wines and spirits were made, which were exported to the island of Cuba.
XX century
With the loss of Cuba, the winery falls into disuse for decades. Local farmers continued to work the property’s vineyards.
1984
The Peris family retains ownership of the estate, recognizing the high historical value of the small winery and the potential of the territory. The Montrubí Society is then created, initially dedicated to produce Cava Brut Nature and Brut.
1986
MontRubí Cava begins to be distributed in specialized stores and restaurants and is consumed on tables throughout Catalonia.
1992
The Barcelona Olympic Games boosted the Cava sector, and we had some splendid years making limited production wines, from our own selected grapes, which were recognized and awarded by prestigious national and international tasters.
2000
At the turn of the century, and after years of making Cava, the sparkling wine sector is experiencing a tumultuous moment that causes a change of direction in the winery: the Gaintus project is created, a new winemaking commitment that focuses on the recovery of Sumoll, a historical, ancestral variety from the Penedès.
2001
Our first red wine of Sumoll, called Gaintus, was put on the market.
2006
We plant our iconic Sumoll vineyard in vertical formation.
2010
First vintage of our young single-variety wines Black and White. Two icons of the winery that we currently export to more than 20 countries
2018
We renovate and expand the old winery, incorporating the latest technology in the wine sector and building a new aging room.
2020
We open the Xalet 1902, remembering the year of construction of a building that has high historical and cultural value in the area. In the Xalet we have our own wine bar, restaurant, event rooms and different outdoor spaces.
2021
We open Casa Gran 1771, a unique, singular and very exclusive 10-room boutique hotel that has a gym, lounge with fireplace and swimming pool.
