The Estate
Finca Montrubí is located in the Avellà Valley, an idyllic spot in the Alt Penedès which covers an area of 100 hectares, 40 of which are vineyards and are divided into 35 plots surrounded by forests of Mediterranean pine, holm oak, olive and oak trees.
From the property’s vineyards, we harvest organically certified grapes of native varieties from the Penedès region and we have been making our wine since 1984 in the winery that completes a more comprehensive project formed by the Hotel Casa Gran 1771 (5*) and the Xalet 1902, an architectural work of restored wine cellar and a shop selling our products.
One of the most important sites on the estate are the remains of the 11th century Sant Andreu de l’Avellà Chapel, which we decided to restore with the help of the Arqueovitis team of professionals, and which gives us a 360º panoramic view of the estate.
Chronology
Late XVIII century
At Avellà, a wine cellar was built for the family that owned the estate, from which brandies and wines were produced and exported to Cuba at that time.
XX century
With the loss of Cuba, the Avellà winery fell into disuse for decades. However, historical sharecroppers continue to work the property’s vineyards.
1984
The Peris family took over ownership of the estate, recognising the high historical value of their small winery and the potential of the Avellà area. The Montrubí Company was born, which in its beginnings was dedicated to the production of Cava Brut and Cava Brut Nature.
1986
Mont-Rubí Cava is beginning to be distributed in specialised shops and restaurants and is consumed on tables all over Catalonia.
1992
The Barcelona Olympic Games boosted the Cava sector, and we had a great few years producing small batches from our own selected grapes, which were also awarded prizes and recognised by prestigious national and international tasters.
2000
At the end of the century, and after years of producing Cava, the bubble sector went through a turbulent time that led us to decide to change direction: the Gaintus project was born at this time, a new wine project that focuses on the recovery of Sumoll, a historical and ancestral variety from the Penedès.
2001
We launched the world’s first 100% Sumoll single varietal wine called Gaintus.
2006
We planted our iconic Sumoll vineyard in vertical formation.
2010
First edition of our young single-varietal wines Black and White. Two iconic wines of the winery that today we have exported to more than twenty countries.
2018
We refurbished and extended the winery, incorporating the latest technology in the wine sector and building a new ageing room.
2020
We inaugurated the Chalet 1902, remembering the year of construction of a building that has a high patrimonial, historical and cultural value in the area. In the Chalet we have our own restaurant, wine bar, rooms for events and different outdoor spaces.
2021
We opened Casa Gran 1771, a boutique hotel with 10 rooms, unique, singular and very exclusive, with gym, lounge with fireplace, bar and swimming pool.
