“There are places you don’t just visit—you inhabit them for a few hours. Montrubí is one of them. Located in Avellà, a tiny village of just 20 residents in Font-rubí, at the heart of the Alt Penedès, where Sumoll ceased to be forgotten and became liquid memory. Twenty-five years ago, Gaintus was born and became the first 100% Sumoll wine bottled in Catalonia.”

So begins an article published in the digital magazine Cupatges, which explores the many offerings of Finca Montrubí as a reference winery, restaurant, and rural accommodation in the Penedès region.

The article highlights that this year marks the 25th anniversary of Gaintus, the first 100% Sumoll wine bottled in Catalonia, a wine that “has become a regional icon” thanks to Montrubí’s tireless efforts to recover and revalue this traditional Penedès variety.

With 100 hectares, 40 of which are vineyards divided into 35 plots, the estate is described as “a mosaic of landscape and biodiversity, with varied soils and orientations that shape the character of the wine.” Or rather, wines, as the article also references other labels in the project, such as Serres Velles, Black Garnatxa, the “surprising orange wine” La Peona, and the star of the show, Gaintus—“a pure, refined Sumoll with great aging potential.”

Beyond the wine itself, the project goes much further, as the article notes, emphasizing the enotourism value of the location. It highlights the integration of the restaurant and hotel “with sensitivity and harmony into the landscape.” The spring tasting menu and accommodation at La Casa Gran, the estate’s boutique hotel, round out a unique experience in the Alt Penedès.

Montrubí is “an example of the vineyard as culture, and Gaintus, the voice that brought Sumoll back to life,” the article concludes.
