The debut edition of the WineMad wine fair offered the opportunity to enjoy a historic tasting of Gaintus Vertical, our most emblematic Sumoll wine. Led by journalist Almudena Ávalos, gastronomy editor at the newspaper El País, and with the participation of Esther Millas, Commercial Director at Montrubí, the event brought together around fifty wine professionals in a packed room.

Five vintages, two decades of evolution
During the tasting, five vintages were served, allowing attendees to discover the project through the evolution of the wine itself:
- 2003: One of the few remaining bottles, bearing witness to the beginnings of the project.
- 2006: The consolidation of Sumoll’s character — a fresh wine still full of life.
- 2016 (Magnum): A special format for an exceptional vintage.
- 2018: The current vintage on the market: a structured wine at its optimal drinking point.
- 2025: The wine from the latest harvest, still ageing in barrels.
The evolution of the wines proved to be remarkably positive, as confirmed by attendees. Each bottle tells the story of a different stage while all maintaining the same common thread: the unmistakable personality of Sumoll.

An engaged audience
Around fifty attendees took part in the session, including professional sommeliers, hospitality professionals, and specialised journalists. The atmosphere was warm, approachable, and highly participative, with unanimously positive feedback. “It has been a real discovery“, attendees commented, also highlighting that the event was not simply a technical tasting, but rather “a celebration of a project, a story, and a grape variety that deserves to be rescued from oblivion”, as several participants shared.
Attendees especially appreciated the opportunity to taste older vintages that are rarely available outside the winery itself.
Gaintus is, in fact, the living testimony of years of work carried out with patience, conviction, and deep respect for the land. “At Montrubí, we are proud to share this journey with professionals who, session after session, help spread the value of our wine project“, summarises Esther Millas, Commercial Director of the winery. She concludes: “Recovering a grape variety is not just about planting vines; it is about building a narrative, preserving a heritage, and investing in a future with deep roots”.
