Montrubí celebrates Sumoll and Gaintus Vertical at Microvi

Microvi kicked off its eleventh edition this past weekend with La Nit dels Sumolls, a must-attend event dedicated to wineries that work with and vinify this historic grape variety from Penedès. Held at the Romanesque Monastery of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs, the event brought together wine professionals and enthusiasts in a unique setting, combining heritage, landscape, and wine culture.

Montrubí took part in the event, taking the opportunity to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Gaintus Vertical, one of our most emblematic wines made from Sumoll.

The Monastery provided the perfect setting to serve several vintages of Sumoll wines. In addition, a special guided tasting of historic vintages—2006, 2010, and 2016—was led by Esther Millas, commercial director, and Jordi Echaíz, the winery’s oenologist. The tasting highlighted the aging potential of this native variety, demonstrating its positive evolution over time.

The tasting was very exciting,” said Esther Millas, “especially because it showed that, after so many years, these wines are still alive and expressive.” Millas also emphasized the collective effort of wineries committed to reviving Sumoll, which is key to preserving wine heritage and ensuring the future of this variety.

“25 vintages are not just 25 wines, but 25 interpretations of the same landscape and 25 years of learning,” Montrubí noted. This milestone is being celebrated throughout 2026 with various promotional initiatives and special activities highlighting the value of tradition and a future full of opportunities for a variety like Sumoll.

Organized by the Avinyonet del Penedès Town Council, Microvi continues to establish itself as a benchmark in promoting local viticulture, with a wide range of activities (tastings, routes, experiences…) running until May 30. The full program can be consulted here.
