Montrubí expands its commitment to Sumoll with new Sumoll Blanc plantings

At Montrubí, we have spent over two decades working to revive the Sumoll, one of the Penedès’ most historic grape varieties. In 2001, we were pioneers in recovering the red Sumoll, at a time when the variety had nearly vanished due to the challenges of cultivation and its irregular yields.

Rather than deterring us, those challenges pushed us to work with greater conviction — preserving a winemaking heritage that champions the value of the region’s native varieties. Now the project takes a new step forward: the planting and vinification of Sumoll Blanc.

Planting more Sumoll Blanc in the Penedès region

Sumoll Blanc is a natural mutation of the red Sumoll and one of the rarest native varieties in the Penedès. Once a historic presence in the region, it had nearly disappeared due to the complexity of its cultivation. Yet its fresh, vibrant profile has rekindled the interest of winemakers committed to preserving the region’s varietal heritage.

Reviving Sumoll Blanc is not simply a look back at history, it is a bet on the future, one that allows us to strengthen the identity of the Penedès through native varieties with genuine enological potential. These new plantings will let us continue exploring what a variety capable of producing fresh, tense, and distinctly characterful wines can truly offer.

An elegant wine with lively acidity

Montrubí’s Sumoll Blanc is part of the Gaintus collection. It is a single-varietal wine made from vines planted over ten years ago on calcareous soils.

We harvest by hand, selectively, keeping the grapes in refrigerated containers to preserve their freshness and aromatic qualities. Microvinification takes place in stainless steel tanks at low temperature, and the wine rests for three months on fine lees, developing complexity, body and elegance.

On the nose, it offers notes of anise and fennel, Mediterranean herbs, white fruit and lime zest, with an elegant background of fresh tobacco. On the palate, it is fresh, broad and silky, with balanced acidity and a subtle salinity that adds depth and persistence.

A natural match for seafood rice dishes, oysters, shellfish and carpaccio.

The first vintage we are releasing is 2025, at a retail price of €18.50. Buy it directly from our online shop.
