The Gaintus Project
The Montrubí winery project began in 1984, in a historic building dating back to 1880, where wines and oils were once produced and exported to Cuba.
In its early years, the winery focused on Cava production, but due to falling prices and saturation in the sparkling wine sector, we chose to take a new path: producing quality still wines made exclusively from local varieties of the Penedès region.
This new chapter began with the Gaintus Project, launched in 2000 with the aim of reviving Sumoll, an ancestral red grape native to the region that was on the brink of extinction.
Despite the cultivation challenges and the lack of available information on its vinification, we recovered an old vineyard of this variety and produced our first bottle of wine: in 2001, Gaintus was born — the first 100% Sumoll red wine on the market.
The name Gaintus was inspired by a climbing route in the Pyrenees, symbolizing the challenge of recovering such a delicate variety. We persevered, and over the years, consolidated our position as a leading winery in the production of Sumoll wines — wines with identity, elegance, and a deep respect for the territory.

Terroir
In the heart of the Catalan pre-coastal mountain range, about 1,650 feet above sea level, we cultivate 100 acres of vineyards. Surrounded by nature, these vineyards grow under a Mediterranean climate with a marked continental influence, ideal for a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes.
The thermal contrast between day and night helps preserve the natural acidity of the grapes, key to obtaining fresh wines with good aging capacity. Our soil, mainly clay- limestone, retains moisture and helps the plant to resist the driest and hottest summers.
The richness and diversity of our terroir is directly reflected in the wines: varied textures, aromatic complexity, character and a marked minerality. Our style seeks to highlight the fruit, freshness and elegance that the land gives us.
Grape varieties: the soul of our wines
For our white wines, we work with Xarel·lo, Macabeu and Parellada; and for our red and rosé wines we use Grenache, Cariñena and, very especially, Sumoll, a variety that we have helped to recover and position.
Organic and vegan wines: commitment to the earth and to you
Our winemaking project is based on respect for the environment.
For this reason, all vineyards are cultivated under the criteria of organic farming, without pesticides or synthetic chemicals.
We work consciously both in the vineyard and in the cellar, with the aim of preserving the natural balance and extracting the best expression of each variety.
This commitment has led us to obtain organic and vegan certification for our entire range of wines.
Montrubí wines combine tradition and innovation, with production techniques adapted to each wine to respect its personality.
Aging is carried out in French oak barrels, cement eggs and artisanal clay amphorae, to promote a smooth and natural evolution of the wine, enhancing its complexity and authenticity.
