The wine of January (and of the year): Gaintus Vertical

We are launching a special year for Montrubí: this 2026 we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first bottle of Sumoll we released to the market. Gaintus Vertical is, and will always be, the iconic wine that embodies the winery’s commitment to recovering this historic grape variety from the Penedès. We can already tell you that throughout 2026 this wine will be at the center of several initiatives and activities at the winery. Stay tuned!

For now, the 2018 vintage of Gaintus Vertical is the wine we recommend opening this January, a vintage that shows the most authentic and honest expression of Sumoll. Protected under the Penedès Designation of Origin, this limited-edition red wine is a sincere reflection of the uniqueness, terroir, and aging potential of mountain-grown Sumoll.

High-altitude Sumoll, character and precision

Gaintus Vertical comes from 30-year-old vineyards located at 550 meters above sea level, on clay-limestone soils with high stoniness, conditions that encourage slow ripening and marked natural tension. Harvesting is done by hand in late September, with double grape selection. The grapes undergo maceration and fermentation with the skins in 1,500-liter foudres using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for 12 months in new 300-liter French oak barrels, followed by a long 24-month bottle aging period that rounds out and harmonizes the wine.

From an organoleptic perspective, the 2018 vintage shows an intense ruby color. On the nose, it initially presents a rustic profile that evolves aromas of fresh cherry, cedar, toasted notes, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is deep and elegant, with pronounced acidity that brings freshness, balance, and remarkable aging potential. Persistent cherry notes stand out over a mineral and balsamic background.

A critically acclaimed, food-friendly wine

Endorsed by international wine critics (92 points Parker, 93 points Guía Peñín, 93 points Wine & Spirits, among others), Gaintus Vertical is ideal for pairing with stews, mountain-style rice dishes, and Mediterranean cuisine of medium to high structure. It is recommended to serve at 14 °C and to decant beforehand to fully enjoy its complexity. A wine with soul, identity, and an aging potential of more than ten years.
