March’s Wine: La Peona, a Tribute to Women

We invite you to travel back in time to discover La Peona, a wine born from memory, as a tribute to the women who worked our lands and so many others in rural surroundings.

The women who traditionally ran the household, cared for the children and animals, were also responsible for fieldwork. Cultivating, harvesting, and even building the dry-stone farm shelters where they would rest and store their tools. That is why they were known as “peonas”: often unseen women who have historically been essential both in the home and in the fields.

Today, we especially wish to remember one of the last women who cared for our Montrubí estates: our Peona now gives her name to the plot she tended, to the dry-stone hut built there and, more recently, she has inspired one of our wines.

An Orange with character

La Peona is a skin-contact wine whose fermentation and maceration with the skins give it a unique character, structure, and its distinctive orange colour.

After hand harvesting and this maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the skins are separated and the wine rests for three months in concrete tanks. We bottle it unfined, unfiltered and with no added sulfites.

The 2023 vintage is a blend of 70% Xarel·lo (planted in 2019) and 30% Xarel·lo Vermell (2020), with 12% ABV. Serve at 10–12 ºC and you will find a warm nose reminiscent of quince and wild aromatic herbs, along with notes of lemon verbena and mint. On the palate it is fresh, with a slight bitter finish.

This March 8th, International Women’s Day, we raise a glass to the many Peonas who have given life to the countryside — with a wine that pays tribute to them. Find it in our online shop!
